Climbing equipment review: Mammut “Passion” climbing rope

Mammut Passion

The Mammut Passion 10mm x 60m climbing rope was one of the very first pieces of climbing equipment that David and I bought as part of our climbing rack. We bought ours as part of a set with 8 quick-draws from welovemountains.com.

We have been using this rope for about a year now, in which time it has seen quite a  bit of action including lot’s of outdoor use where it has got sea water, sheep sh**t and lashings of dirt thrown at it. We have always been careful to wipe it down after each use, and it has always been coiled properly for storage. It’s had a few falls on it, none of them have been further than a couple of metres, though half of those had David’s 15 stone at the business end!

The rope still appears to be in excellent condition and has no signs of damage or stretching. We now use it as as an indoor training rope as we have recently invested in a pair of Mammut Genesis SuperDry 8.5mm x 60m ropes, which we are practicing on outdoors (more on that later).

To conclude; if you’re looking for a versatile, hard wearing climbing rope that represents excellent value for money, you can do a lot worse than the Mammut Passion.

    The Mammut ropes are becoming our best selling rope brand. We use the Passion on our top ropes at Rockcity, so as you can guess, they are used a lot a the wall! You can buy it in 50 metres and 60 metres.

    Be very careful if you’re buying gear from Ebay or second hand. You need to know the history of all your climbing equipment, how many falls your rope has taken, how old your harness is etc. If you do buy any climbong equipment, make sure that it’s brand new or you know where it’s been and what is been used for etc.

    Thanks Becky, Great advice!

    Don’t go buying second hand gear from Ebay folks, especially rope. Rope is only guaranteed for a certain number of falls, they need replacing fairly regularly. If you buy a second hand one, how do you know the person selling it hasn’t used it to tow their car? Just don’t take the risk.
