Climbing equipment review: Petzl Altios climbing helmet

petzl-altiosAfter putting up with my Mammut Skywalker for over a year, I finally decided enough was enough and elected to buy a new climbing helmet.

A good friend, Justin had just bought a Petzl Altios so I asked him if I could have a go. As soon as I tried it on, I was sold!

The Petzl Altios features a kind of webbing which keeps a good airspace between your noggin and the outer shell. This keeps your head cool and seems to stop the helmet from sliding around (no more simpleton photos – hurray). It also makes it super comfortable.

I love the design, the helmet fits nicely and I can can wear it comfortably all day – job done! There’s not much else to say, apart from it also has:

  • Climate Control System: provides ventilation between the inner shell and the top of the head (can be closed in cold weather with the 6  plugs stored in the inner shell)
  • Removable ADAPT clip, for easy attachment of any Petzl headlamp equipped with the ADAPT system (TIKKA/ZIPKA family)
  • Removable and washable headband foam and mesh
  • Easy-to-use molded adjustment wheel quickly dials in the headband size, even while the helmet is being worn
  • Adjustable chinstrap, nape height and headband for an extremely comfortable fit
  • Chinstrap can be adjusted forward or backward for added comfort Adjustment buckles are placed to the side, away from the chin
  • Narrow polyester webbing straps which offer improved comfort
  • Headlamp attachment with 4 optimally placed clips

Well done Petzl for creating a fantastic climbing helmet.

I’m sure I’ll come under fire for my damning review of the Mammut Skywalker, and giving the Petzl Altios such a glowing comparison. I admit that for matters of fit, it is entirely subjective. Everyone’s head shape is different, if you’re buying a helmet try it on. Don’t just pop it on the top of your head and say “that’ll do”. Make sure you fasten the strap, look up and down to make sure it stays put.

As always, I would love to hear your opinion. Drop me a comment below.

It's good to share!
