John Bale

My Name is John Bale and I have been climbing for the last 14 years. Being lucky enough to live in Sheffield, most of my learning was done in the Peak and it’s still my favourite place to climb on a summers evening. I now run a small, busy outdoor business based in the Peak District, called First Mountains.
After passing my degree in Chemistry I went to work for Wild Country, where I learned a great deal about climbing equipment, its manufacture and testing.
I’m also obsessed with winter climbing and I’m a bit of a gear freak. I appreciate good design and function rather than fussy stuff.

When not climbing, blogging or running a business I enjoy reading cool climbing books, mountain biking and going on cool expeditions.
