Basic climbing techniques: Hand holds ‘Mono’
This is the fifth episode in our climbing basics series, designed for those of you out there who have just got into climbing.
We’re continuing with hand holds this week. This time we’re covering the mono.
- What is a mono? A mono is a small pocket in which you can only fit a single finger.
- Where will I find monos? You’re likely to find these holds on harder routes.
- How do I use them? Watch the video. You’ll notice how Glenn closes up his other fingers to strengthen his grip.
If you’re new to climbing I would recommend that you either avoid mono holds or approach them with caution. It takes a long time to build the strength in your finger joints and tendons to cope with the stress of putting lots of weight on a single finger.

Watching videos or reading climbing techniques is not a substitute for proper instruction. Climbing can be a dangerous activity. We would always recommend that you seek out professional instruction before attempting any of the techniques that we demonstrate.
