Basic climbing techniques: Hand holds ‘Crimp’

This is the fourth episode in our climbing basics series, designed for those of you out there who have just got into climbing.

We’re continuing with hand holds this week. This time we’re covering the crimp.

  • What is a crimp? Crimps are small but positive edges upon which you can only fit the tips of your fingers.
  • Where will I find crimps? Everywhere! Once you progress from the easiest of climbing routes you will encounter small ‘crimpy’ holds on a regular basis.
  • How do I use them? Watch the video. You’ll notice how Glenn carefully positions his fingers on the best part of the hold then draws his hand in toward the hold, finally using his thumb to slightly enclose the first finger for a little more strength.

Before using crimps, make sure your fingers are properly warmed up. ‘Crimping’ is one of the easiest ways to injure your fingers.

Watching videos or reading climbing techniques is not a substitute for proper instruction. Climbing can be a dangerous activity. We would always recommend that you seek out professional instruction before attempting any of the techniques that we demonstrate.
