Basic climbing techniques: Hand holds ‘Sidepull’
This is the sixth episode in our climbing basics series, designed for those of you out there who have just got into climbing.
We’re continuing with hand holds this week. This time we’re covering the ‘side pull’.
- What is a side pull? A side pull is a hold where the direction of pull is to the side rather than underneath the hold.
- How do I use them? Keep your body close to the wall, pull on the side of the hold and push from your feet, reaching for the next hold with your other hand.

Watching videos or reading climbing techniques is not a substitute for proper instruction. Climbing can be a dangerous activity. We would always recommend that you seek out professional instruction before attempting any of the techniques that we demonstrate.
